Where to Eat Near Starved Rock State Park

Illinois' most-visited state park draws hikers, paddlers, and eagle-watchers from across the Midwest to its sandstone canyons along the Illinois River — right in the Illinois Valley's backyard.

Starved Rock State Park sits along the Illinois River near Utica and Oglesby, and it's the reason a lot of visitors find their way to this part of the state in the first place. Eighteen canyons carved by glacial meltwater cut through the park's sandstone bluffs, connected by about 13 miles of well-marked trail.

Trails & canyons

Most first-time visitors start with the loop through French Canyon, the park's most popular stop, then continue on to Wildcat Canyon — home to the park's tallest waterfall at 125 feet — and LaSalle Canyon, reached by a sandy trail that ends at another waterfall. Further out, Tonty, Pontiac, Basswood, and Lonetree canyons see noticeably less foot traffic if you're looking to get away from the crowds. The waterfalls are most dramatic in spring and after heavy rain; they can run dry by late summer.

Eagle watching

From late December through February, bald eagles gather near the Illinois River Lock and Dam to feed in the open water below the dam. The overlook atop Starved Rock itself, the seawall, and the Illinois Waterway Visitor Center across the river are the most reliable spots to see them.

Visiting

Trails are open 7 a.m. until sunset year-round. The visitor center is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, though it closes for federal and state holidays between November and February. The main entrance and visitor center are at 2678 East 873 Road, Oglesby, IL 61348. Some trails may see construction closures through 2026 as part of a park-wide trail improvement project — check the Illinois DNR's park page for current conditions before you go.

Where to eat nearby

Utica sits right at the park's main entrance, with Oglesby and LaSalle a short drive further out — plenty of places to refuel before or after a hike.
